The parents of a girl who died after inhaling too much aerosol deodorant in Britain are raising awareness about it. Giorgia Green, 14, diagnosed with autism found the scent of her spray-on deodorant comforting. The deodorant belonged to her mother. Giorgia would spray the deodorant whenever she felt a little bit anxious as it gave her a sense of comfort.
His daughter was found unresponsive in May of last year after suffering cardiac arrest. Paul, her father said that her daughter’s heart stopped beating as a result of inhaling the product and added to the statement that the door of the bedroom was open, so it was not an enclosed environment.
Although it’s unknown how much of the product Giorgia possibly inhaled, Paul and his wife, Clare Green, said that she would have inhaled more than the amount normally sprayed during a single application.
And now they urge for clearer product labeling to warn others of the dangers of aerosol deodorants. Many are unaware of the consequences of using aerosol deodorants.
Fundraising Campaign By Giorgia’s Parents
An inquest into the teen’s passing found her cause of death was consistent breathing of aerosol. After the confirmation regarding the reason for their daughter’s death, they started a fundraising campaign for their daughter at Justgiving.com (1). Aerosol cans contain toxic and chemical gases that are life-threatening, Giorgia’s parents wrote in the caption as they pleaded to help them spread awareness regarding the issue.
The couple also mentions that the dangers of aerosol products at home, are not limited to children. They pray that their daughter’s passing would create seriousness about the issue and prevent further tragedies.
The couple believes that the current warnings on aerosol cans in the U.K. are too small. The British Aerosol Manufacturers Association, however, told that deodorants have ‘very clear warnings.’
Back in 2016, a 16-year-old teenager named Thomas Townsend died from a deodorant overdose. The boy found collapsed in his bedroom where the police found 42 cans of deodorant. The cause of his death was butane gas inhalation.
Canada has a range of labeling requirements for cosmetics that come in pressurized cans, including standards for symbols, placement, font sizes, and wording, depending on the size and type of product.
Controversial Toxins Found In Deodorant
Parabens are toxins found in deodorants and personal care products. Paraben has the capacity to emulate estrogen in the body and can interfere with the production of body hormones.
Triclosan is used to prevent bacterial contamination. Many consumer brands add the substance to deodorants to kill bacteria. Combined with water, triclosan can create the carcinogenic gas chloroform which causes cancer.
Phthalates are plasticizers found in children’s toys, fragrances, deodorants, and lotions. These can lead to asthma, ADHD, breast cancer, obesity, autism spectrum disorders, altered reproductive development, male fertility issues, and many other problems. Aluminum is also used in aerosol deodorant that can cause Alzheimer’s and breast cancer.
Parents of Giorgia are using donations raised from the fundraising campaign under their daughter’s name to create awareness regarding the controversial toxins found in deodorant and its consequences.
