How to get soft lips

Having soft, luscious, kissable lips are such a flex, isn’t it? But, how to make your lips soft? If this is a question that has ever crossed your mind, then let me just tell you that it has crossed my mind too.

We don’t pay enough attention to our lips, do we? But that won’t do. If you want soft, kissable lips, then you have to care for them.

The lips are one of the most sensitive parts of the human body. They are made up of so many nerve endings. Which makes them a lot more sensitive than our fingertips. It can be tough to care for your lips because the skin of the lips is the thinnest skin in the body.

How to Get Soft Lips?

How To Get Soft Lips

Lips are also really sensitive to the weather and temperatures. You might have noticed your lips getting all dry, chapped, and flaky during the winters. Luckily, there are a lot of products on the market that can help you reverse the damage done to your lips. Moreover, there are many things that you already own, that are capable of giving you super soft lips.

There are a couple of ways that you can get soft, beautiful lips. Lip care doesn’t really have to be super elaborate or expensive.

You can take care of your lips by paying attention to the little things you are doing and making minor changes in your lifestyle. Here are a few ways that will make sure that your lips are moisturized, soft, supple, and kissable.

Moisturize

I feel like you already knew this. However, let me tell you again.  If you’re here wondering how to make your lips soft, it is super important to keep your lips moisturized. Moisturized lips are much more presentable and will make you feel more confident.

However, the reason you need to moisturize your lips is not just beauty. Unlike most parts of the body, the lips do not contain any oil glands; which means that they can’t create their own hydration. So applying a good lip balm will keep your lips from chapping and will protect them from damage.

Drink Water

You need to drink water for more reasons than to have soft lips. However, drinking 8 glasses of water will help you keep your lips from getting chapped and wrinkle-free. If you feel like your lips are looking more dry and chapped than usual, it might be a sign of dehydration.

Drinking water will help you out with this problem. Snacking on food items with higher water content will help you as well. Drinking water only helps with chapped lips indirectly. It is possible to have dry lips even if you drink a lot of water.

Protect Your Lips

Since the lips are very sensitive, they get easily affected by the weather and temperature. You can cover your lips up with a scarf or a mask to protect them from sunlight, windy weather, or winter.

If you are not comfortable covering your mouth, you can just use petroleum jelly on your lips. It will protect your lips from the cold and dust and help to make your lips soft.

However, if you are going out in the summer, then make sure you use a lip balm that contains SPF so that it can protect you from the sun.

Stop licking/Biting Your Lips

Stop licking Biting Your Lips

The more you mess with your lips, the drier and more chapped it gets. I think it’s a common habit most of us have; licking our lips when it feels dry. You probably think that licking your lips when they feel dry might help you hydrate them, but it does the exact opposite.

Moreover, if you bite your lips often, it will peel away the delicate skin and cause more damage. The saliva dehydrates your lips further and leaves them at a higher risk of getting chapped.

Do Not Pick Your Lips

I understand how tempting it is to pick at your lips. When the skin from your lips gets dry and flaky, most of us try to peel it away. But when you try to peel the flaky skin off your lips, it will cause more damage.

You might often notice that there is bleeding when you pick the skin off of your lips. This will slow down the healing process. When your skin gets flaked, you can either scrub them away with a lip scrub or you can use a natural hydrating lip balm.

Scrub Your Lips

You have to scrub your lips. Scrubbing your lips once or twice a week will make them soft, smooth, supple, and kissable. Scrubbing will get rid of all the dead cells and flaky skin on your lips. It will restore the shine and smoothness of your lips as well.

Importance of Lip Hydration

The lips are one of the most attractive parts of our body. They are also the part of a body that never gets a break from exposure. Lips are exposed to the elements, every second of every day.

They are exposed to hot climates, UV rays, dry air, cold, etc. they go through a lot. So, it is important to help your lips out by hydrating them.

With all this exposure and not enough care, it is very easy for your lips to get shriveled and form wrinkles. Your lips can easily make you look old. However, with a little bit of care, you can regain the softness and shine of your lips.

Drinking a lot of water will help you out with dehydration (1). However, drinking water will not completely get rid of your chapped lips. You have to use a good moisturizing lip balm for that. Exfoliating your lips 2-3 times a week will also help to make your lips soft.

Scrub your lips gently with a homemade or store-bought lip scrub. While you are at it, stop licking, biting, and picking at your lips. They will do more harm to your lips and make them even drier and chapped.

What’s the Problem with Chapped Lips?

Chapped lips are something every one of us has experienced. Your lips can get chapped due to cold weather, sun exposure, dry air, dehydration, etc. The skin on the lips is a lot thinner as compared to other parts of the body.

So they get affected by the elements more. The lips lack the ability to hydrate themselves; like most of our body parts, lips don’t have oil glands. However, you can have chapped lips as a result of allergies, medical conditions, or certain medications.

Chapped lips can happen at any age. Children, teens, and adults can experience dry and flaky lips. However, people who lick their lips are more susceptible to this.

People who live in really cold, hot, or dry climates get chapped lips as well. Chapped lips are usually uncomfortable. If your lips are severely chapped, then it might cause stinging sensations while eating salty, spicy, and citrusy food items.

How to Make Lips Soft with Coconut Oil

You might have heard about using coconut oil for dry lips. But, do you know why people use coconut oil? Coconut oil contains moisturizing and anti-aging properties that help to keep your lips soft.

How to Use Coconut Oil For Chapped, Dry Lips

The oil creates a barrier when you apply it to your lips. This barrier will protect your skin from bacteria and irritants. This is ideal when your lips are exposed to wind or air.

The lauric acid (2) in coconut oil contains moisturizing properties that will seep into your skin. This will keep your lips soft and will help heal dry and chapped lips.

All you have to do is apply a few drops of coconut oil to your lips as many times as you want. If you have really sensitive skin, use whatever your dermatologist prescribes you for chapped lips.

Why Use Medicated Lip Balms?

It is a fact that the purpose of all lip balms is to protect and moisturize the lips. The lip butters, gels, masks, etc. do the same thing. Lip balms usually contain moisturizing ingredients such as petroleum jelly, lanolin(3), shea butter, cocoa butter, etc.

These ingredients will prevent any water loss that might happen. Wax is added to the lip balm so that it can stick to your lips.

What makes medicated lip balms different from normal lip balms, are ingredients like menthol, camphor, etc. which tend to soothe irritated lips.

Medicated lip balms also contain SPF and antioxidants, which are capable of reducing the damage that might occur to the skin’s collagen and elastin.

Medicated lip balms might have a kick to them when you apply them to your lips. The menthol and the camphor might cause a cool sensation, like when you chew mint gum.
