Brazilian butt lift was so painful

“I remember waking up from surgery, screaming from the top of my lungs. The pain was unbearable.”

– To anyone considering cosmetic surgeries, these words from a woman sharing her experience after a Brazilian butt lift surgery will come as a warning. Tik Toker Jordyn Genevie went in for a Brazilian butt lift and apparently woke up to the worst nightmare of her life after the surgery.

In a viral video that has garnered more than 1.2 million views on TikTok, she describes the experience as “traumatizing.” For Genevie, the pain was “literally like getting dropped off in the jungle and getting your a– whooped by 20 gorillas …”

“B-ch, it hurts. No, never again.” Genevie could be seen crying in exasperation further describing her pain as “I mean, I don’t know, hitting your toe on the corner of a metal boxspring times a trillion.”

What Happens In A Brazilian Butt Lift?

A  Brazilian butt lift (BBL) is a plastic surgery procedure where a doctor transfers fat to your buttocks from other areas of your body like the abdomen, hips, lower back, or thighs. Basically, fat grafting. This procedure is like killing two birds with one stone for women who wish to augment the look of their buttocks. Since it is done along with liposuction, apart from lifting the buttocks, it also serves to remove fat from another part.

Well known health risks associated with BBLs include bruising, skin discoloration, and infection. Worse, if your blood vessels or nerves are affected, it can lead to fat embolism (disruption to blood supply caused by fat globules in the blood vessel) or even death.

BBL dates back to as early as the 1960s and is credited to a surgeon from Brazil. From Jennifer Lopez and Nicki Minaj, to Cardi B, Kadarshians and Kylie Jenner, Brazilian butt lift surgery is flaunted by more and more celebrities. This growth in popularity not just in the celebrity world, but among the common women too. According to a survey by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. BBLS is one of the fastest growing plastic surgeries, with the number of Brazilian butt lifts performed rising to 77.6 percent globally from 2015 to 2019. And in 2020 alone, 40,000 BBLs were performed by surgeons worldwide.

Interestingly, it is not just the procedure numbers that are soaring, but the number of deaths by the surgery too. The rise in BBL seekers is notwithstanding the notoriety it gained for having a shocking fatality rate of 1 in 3000 (source: RealSelf, 2021). Many surveys have shown that Brazilian Butt Lifts have the highest mortality rate, among aesthetic surgical procedures. In the US, South Florida stands on top of these mortality rates.

Brazilian butt lifts are different from butt implants where artificial devices are placed in the buttocks surgically to enhance volume and shape. Brazilian butt lift offers more projection and better contouring by adding curves and improving the body’s proportions.

Last year, the Kadarshians were rumored to have their  BBLs removed. Both Kim Kardashian and Khloe Kadarshian had come into the spotlight by virtue of their shrinking butts. Pictures posted on the internet by the celebrities did not elude the eyes of fans, according to whom, they got the fillers and implants removed. Friends close to them apparently reasoned that they were trading a bigger butt for a slimmer look. Cardi B also did reveals 95 percent of her butt injections have been removed

In December last year, a Florida mother of two lost her life to BBL. Jaynisha “Jayla” Williams, 26, was pronounced dead in October 2021, not waking up from her anesthesia after the surgery.

Botched butt injections had led to the death of another woman. Marja McClendon in 2018, who was killed by an unlicensed surgeon who injected her with silicone.

Mexican influencer Joselyn Cano, 29, also lost her life in 2020 after her butt-lift surgery went wrong.

After investigations uncovered the spike in BBL deaths, one of the reasons attributed to the failed surgeries was fatigue. A panel of plastic surgeons therefore recommended  putting some limits on how many surgeries you should be doing in a day… “Just like the truckers are limited by their hours of service, surgeons should also be limited by hours of service because this operation creates a lot of fatigue,” Dr. Del Vecchio said.

Knowledge of the risks and the need for caution before deciding on going for a BBL, described as the most dangerous of cosmetic surgeries, is once again reminded by this trending video on Tik Tok on a woman’s traumatizing experience. Another TikToker too had reported that she developed necrosis, a death of the body tissue, in one of her butt cheeks, leading to one being bigger than the other.

After Genie, who goes by the username @jordyngenevie(1) on Tik Tok shared her scary experience, several other users with similar experiences also came chiming in. “Thank you for being the first person, to be honest,” someone else wrote. “I got mine in May & it was HORRIBLE too! Mentally & physically draining.” wrote a commenter in response to the video.
