Bluesky CEO Jay Graber is facing her biggest challenge as her brainchild is finally going public. Just like any other startup, there is huge pressure to succeed and monetize the platform in a good manner.

The Visionary

Bluesky CEO Jay Graber

Jay Graber joined the Bluesky two years after it was initially announced by Twitter’s then-chief Jack Dorsey as an independent project to find an alternate for federally controlled social media.

Jay Grabber was working at Happening. Inc. when she was approached to helm Bluesky due to her experience as a founder and her expertise in crypto-based decentralized systems.

She expressed that her job could be compared to that of a substitute teacher, who is controlling every aspect as she can, but the students are revolting, creating chaos, and poking holes at everything to see what happens.

She believes that the dynamic with the audience is extremely important for social media to function in a good manner.

Bluesky is filled with an audience that wants to enjoy this freedom of decentralization so much so that they decided to name the posts Skeet, an amalgamation of a tweet and sky from Bluesky.

On her account, she tried to remind them it was called posts, but the audience heeded her no mind and trolled her with memes, which she reminisced about as a humorous experience. She exclaimed that once a name got stuck among the audience, it would remain the same.

She expressed her stressful days when the day for public release was approaching closer and the audience was going bonkers in the app, going from shitposting and creating new functions at an alarming rate.

Garber believes the challenges will only get harder from here on out, as there are more things to worry about, including monetizing and creating a systemic structure within the chaotic environment of an open-source code community.

She believes her team could manage and even preserve to find a day when their model would become the norm over the controlled ones.

The Philosophy of Bluesky

Bluesky is not just another competitor that follows the Twitter model of social media and generates profit. They are here to radicalize the social media industry with their AT protocol for social media.

Which gives the public a complete view of their codebase and their algorithmic structure. If there are any changes the public wishes to implement, all they need to do is code the required function and update the open-source code base.

Many functions of the Bluesky were created by the public in this manner like the GIF and video part, which was created by a member of the public and added as a public contribution.

One of the most used aspects of open-source code is the freedom to create algorithmic feeds based on your needs. There are many customized feeds built by various developers for various functions, like finding specific niches or communities, creating sub-sections of followers, and even finding the feed from the perspectives of other localities.

One of the major risks during development for Graber and her team was choosing the amount of technological advancement to sacrifice for user ease, as the most technically advanced functionalities always need more complex knowledge to operate.

Eventually, she decided to opt for a better user experience over technical prowess. She expressed that they want a user to post and use the software without learning something new but offered a chance to learn and implement if they wished to.
