Who Was Angela Chao? Life And Legacy Of Foremost Leader

Angela Chao, CEO of Foremost Group, has died at the age of 60, meeting with a tragic car accident, according to the announcement by the company on Monday. Chao was distinguished as a pioneering women icon in the shipping industry, by leading the New York-headquartered dry bulk shipping company. She was a philanthropist also who stood for sustainable business practices and in support of the arts. 

According to the statement from Foremost Group, Chao was at the helm of the company, taking up several critical roles over the past years of her career at the company founded by her father in 1964. While She acted as Assistant Vice President, she implemented Foremost’s safety management system into practice. Later, She monitored ship operations, management, chartering, sales, and purchases while she was growing into Senior Vice President. 

Chao was throned into the role of Chair and CEO at Foremost Group in 2018. She was a visionary leader who strengthened the company in its commitment to innovation and environmentally less hazardous solutions in the dry bulk commodities industry sphere. 

Chao is hailed, as the driving force behind Foremost’s sustainable operations method and eco-friendly fleet management, by her colleagues. Apart from her industrious business career, Chao is marked as a dedicated philanthropist and patron of the arts. She acted as a board member of the American Bureau of Shipping Council and many other boards like Maritime Academy’s International Maritime Business Department, the Metropolitan Opera, the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. 

Chao was very kind-hearted to support Asian-American causes generously. She founded a fellowship at Harward College to fund scholarships for deserving students. Chao is described as a family person who found time to share laughter and joy with her loved ones.

Academically Gifted From Youth

Chao demonstrated her keen intelligence and business-savvy nature from a very young age before rising to be a child prodigy in the shipping industry. She willingly followed her father to work station during “Take Your Child to Work Days.”

After securing magna cum laude in economics from Harvard College in economics after three years course Chao earned her MBA from Harvard Business School soon.
