Lana Del Rey, the American singer-songwriter celebrity, expressed her excitement about headlining Coachella in April and getting nominated for five Grammy awards this year, marking 10 years since she last played the festival. The track “A&W” sat unfinished for several months before Del Rey asked producer Jack Antonoff to listen. Though originally a ballad, Antonoff pushed for it to transition into the more upbeat “Jimmy Cocoa Puff.” Del Rey was not sure but ultimately agreed, hoping for a happier ending. She’s glad they trusted Antonoff’s musical instincts, as the unlikely song gained traction.
Del Rey on Her Skims Shoot
Lana Del Rey said that she unexpectedly created ‘this’ album after meeting cameraman Mike Hermosa, who played her with excellent musical ideas. Singing over just 4 of his chord progressions, she quickly wrote “Did You Know…,” “Let the Light In,” “The Grants,” and “Taco Truck.” With that foundation, she felt confident to make a full album, despite a difficult year. Perfecting the striking album covers took as long as the music, but captured the spirit and gave it new energy. The visuals were key in accelerating it along.
She further added that the shoot for Skims, shapewear brand co-founded by Kim Kardashian, was for a Valentine’s Day collection, so she followed Kim’s concept. They wanted her blonde to differentiate from other photos, which she liked. She has worked with the photographer Nadia before and loves her style. Knowing she also shot Kim’s snow bunny campaign drew her in. She hoped the shoot would have a bit of a 1960s feel too.
