Pamela Anderson, 55, talks menopause

Pamela Anderson fans have fallen in love with her all over once again, this time for a different reason. By opening up her handbag for British Vogue, she has opened up a space in our time for menopause – a topic still trying to break free of its taboo shell.

For viewers who were left agape as Anderson revealed her outlandish ‘G-string trick’ for the 90’s tousled-updo, her candour about aging and the female experience drew reactions of endearment as much as those of surprise. For those that had had enough of what’s-in-my-bag vanity talk and for those waiting for a change in the feminine status quo, the 90’s Playboy star’s chit-chat came as a welcome amazement. It was the gust of fresh breath the women of our decade needed to take.

As with most taboos, menopause revolves around a biological phase women naturally go through. It’s hard to talk about and its manifestations embarrassing to admit even for the common woman–whether it be at home, in the workplace, or in friends circles.

What’s Pamela’s Talk on Menopause?

“I have, like, a fan for hot flashes,” says the in-her-50s glamour icon flaunting her folding fan, while alluding to her menopausal “hot flashes”. Signaled by a sudden feeling of warmth in the upper body, hot flashes are the hallmark symptom of the menopausal transition in women. These sudden bursts of heat, particularly on the face, neck, and chest, may also cause sweating and/or leave your skin red as if you’re blushing.

What’s Pamela's Talk on Menopause?

Though not always a women-exclusive occurrence and can be caused by embarrassment, hot or spicy foods and drinks, and adrenaline-inducing situations to anyone, hot flashes are mostly identified as a menopausal symptom. Along with mood swings and night sweats, hot flashes in relation to menopause are rarely, if ever, openly discussed. Happens to the best of us women, yet somehow makes talking about it more uncomfortable than the experience itself.

Though not the first public figure to lift the veil off menopause, Pamela Anderson talking about menopause publicly and with such grace is a promising first step in stripping the topic of its ‘disgrace’. Previously, Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Naomi Watts had set the stage for the menopause talk.

Further, the Baywatch “lifeguard” saves lives by nonchalantly bringing up her CBD oil – another permanent resident in her handbag. “I have CBD oil for my arthritis. Whenever my hands hurt,” she says. There is no shame in the age game; none of us are spared by Geras the god of Ageing. Anderson embraces her age with youthful enthusiasm even as she talks about menopause and arthritis, making way for the laywomen to follow suit.
