Reflecting on the opportunity, McEntire shared an intimate glimpse into her reaction. “He said that they wanted me to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl, and I said ‘Oh my gosh. Well, let me think about that,’” McEntire recounted. Her partner, Rex Linn, a fervent football enthusiast, didn’t hesitate. “Yes, she’ll do it. Absolutely,” he assured. 

The atmosphere at Allegiant Stadium was electric as McEntire, adorned in a puffy, gray faux fur coat and holding hands with Rex Linn, walked in. Her performance was not only a vocal triumph but also a moment of unity and pride, further accentuated by a U.S. Navy flyover that soared above the stadium upon the anthem’s conclusion. 

McEntire’s connection to the national anthem dates back to her discovery as a singer at the 1974 National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma. This background makes her Super Bowl debut even more symbolic. “This ain’t my first rodeo! I’d never have imagined when I sang the anthem at the National Finals Rodeo 50 years ago that I’d be singing it today at the Super Bowl,” McEntire reflected before the game. 

Her participation in the Super Bowl was not just about performing; it was about honoring the history and the significance of the event. “I’m honored to be part of something as big and historic as the Super Bowl coming to Las Vegas for the first time,” McEntire stated when her performance was announced. Preparation for the anthem mirrored the diligence she applies to her concerts. In a statement, she revealed that she just warms up like one does at a concert and sing it five or six times, and get in there, and make the performance.
