Carey Mulligan Turns Up The Heat On The Red Carpet Wearing A Black Mermaid Dress

Carey Mulligan, 38, made a show-stopping entry at the 2024 Oscars on Sunday, March 10, in a stunning black mermaid dress that featured a statement-making scalloped hem over white tulle. The three-time Academy Award nominee graced the dress which is a recreation of a classic Balenciaga design from 1951. 

For the occasion, Mulligan carried minimal accessories that included elbow-length black gloves and Fred Leighton’s old mine-cut diamond earrings.

The icon was nominated for Best Actress for her role as Felicia Montealegre in the flick, Maestra, in which she played the role of the wife of composer Leonard Bernstein, portrayed by Bradley Cooper, who bagged his own nomination in the category of Best Actor. Besides Mulligan, Emma Stone, Sandra Huller, Lily Gladstone, and Annette Bening were nominated for the same category for ‘Poor Things,’ ‘Anatomy of a Fall,’ ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,’ and ‘Nyad,’ respectively. 

Her dress paid tribute to the pivotal moment in the flick she was nominated for at the night. According to the press release, a pivotal moment in the movie occurs in 1951, the year when Feloicia marries Leonardo Bernstein. Since the movie is based on a true story, the creators decided to horno by recreating an iconic gown from Cristobal Balenciaga’s Winter 1951 Collection. Reportedly, the original dress is currently preserved in the Kyoto Costume Institute, which means, the fashion house designed the dress for the lead actress of The Maestra, using only photographs, sketches, and swatches as guides. 

The recreation of the gown was a group work led by creative director Demna, who was committed to preserving the vintage feel of the gown.  She also made sure that the finished result looked modern on the Oscar-nominated actress. 

Earlier in February, Mulligan explained in a statement how she celebrated her Oscar nomination without realizing she accidentally frightened her daughter in the process. Recalling the moment of realization, she said “When my name came up (on the nomination), everyone screamed, and my baby started crying. 

The actress walked the red carpet along with her husband, musician Marcus Mumford who rocked an all-black suit. To elevate the cool factor of his ensemble, he also sported a pair of sunglasses. Mulligan and Mumford tied the knot in April 2012, and currently, the couple share three kids, son, Wilfred, 5, daughter, Evelyn Grace, 7, and they recently welcomed a baby daughter in 2023. 

Though the couple has yet to reveal the name of their baby daughter, the actress said in a November 2023 statement that the little one was settling in nicely with the family. 

When asked about the newborn, Mulligan jokingly said, “Oh, she is great. Good baby. I’d give her 10 out of 10 so far. We will have to see how long that lasts” 

It was not the first time she gained a nomination at the Oscars. The actress was previously nominated in 2020 and 2009 for the Best Actress category for the films “Promising Young Woman,’ and ‘An Education,’ respectively.

In February, she said that anyone who says they do not like earning nominations could only be lying as for her, “it is just the coolest thing” and “it is nothing less than receiving the actual accolade.”
