For baseball fans, the news came as a bolt out of the blue. This was not a player leaving the field. Even so, emotions ran deep with this one. This was Renel Brooks-Moon, the beloved PA announcer, who confirmed that she will not be continuing with the Giants anymore.

American professional baseball team San Francisco Giants and Renel Brooks, their long-term Public Address Announcer, revealed they are parting ways after 24 seasons together. The Giants announced the news in a press release titled, “Ahead of the 2024 Season, Giants Name Renel Brooks-Moon Public Address Announcer Emeritus.” The reason, however, may come as a surprise. The decision was reportedly made after “extensive discussions” when both parties could not agree on a contract extension. Brooks-Moon’s contract ended last December, and the parties failed to reach an agreement. The announcement made it clear that they had “mutually and amicably agreed to part ways.”

Renel Brooks-Moon’s Fans Express Displeasure

Brooks was not just any announcer, but for most baseball fans, a part of their nostalgia and childhood memories. SF Giants wrote on Instagram:

“Thank you, @RenelSFVoyce, for an amazing 24 years in the booth #ForeverGiant”

The note came alongside a poster that featured a collage of Brooks with the text “THANK YOU” written over it.

Brooks fans were, however, quick to register their disagreement with the decision, especially over the reason they cited. One user wrote on X,

“If an organization can’t get a deal done with a beloved figure like Renel after “extensive discussions,” that’s just a huge misstep.”

Another wrote,

“Giants ownership continually seems to not understand what we love about giants baseball.”

Moon, on the other hand, acknowledged that it had been the honor of her lifetime to serve on the mic, and in the community for the giants for 24 years. She remarked that she shall never forget her very first game on April 11, 2000 as the job was “bigger than her”. She took the opportunity to assert that representation matters and that she hopes her time in the booth would inspire little girls, young women, and people of color to pursue their dreams even if those dreams seem impossible. “Because impossible dreams can become true,” she concluded.

Brooks-Moon also thanked her fans and wished well for her successor and new manager Bob Melvin as the team prepared for 2024 season.

Renel Brooks-Moon the Legend and Her Career

Brooks-Moon started her career in the 1980s, working for various radio stations. She joined the San Francisco Giants in 2000, becoming the first female announcer in the history of Major League Baseball. she also was the first woman to work the PA mic for a championship in any major sport.

She was named the inaugural voice of the San Francisco Giants’ new stadium, Pacific Bell Park. Moon was soon recognized as an iconic figure in San Francisco sports. Her dedication, which resonated in her zealous and bold delivery in a distinctive voice, captured the hearts of fans in Bay Area sports community and beyond.

Monday’s announcement also stated that she will henceforth be the club’s “Public Address Announcer Emeritus” who will continue representing the Club as a volunteer, activist and mentor. Giants President and CEO Larry Baer also announced that the booth Oracle Park will be renamed in her honor. Earlier on March 18, 2005, former San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom declared “Renel Brooks-Moon Day” in her honor.
