Emma Stone wins second Best Actress Oscar

Emma Stone bagged her second Best Actress Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards for her incredible performance in the period fantasy comedy Poor Things which also featured a series of Hollywood A-listers including Christopher Abbot, Jerrod Carmichael, Willem Dafoe, and Mark Ruffalo. Stone played Bella Baxter, an adult woman who has the brain of a child, in the movie directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. It is based on Alasdi Glay’s most acclaimed novel under the same name. Stone previously won the Best Actress award in 2016 for La La Land starring Ryan Gosling starring opposite her.

On the stage, the 35-year-old actress broke down into tears while accepting her second Oscar. She expressed gratitude for everyone who supported her during her Oscar acceptance speech. In her emotional speech, she acknowledged her competitor, Lily Gladstone, saying she was in awe of the actress while also expressing hope to work together in the future. She then continued to thank the entire team of Poor Things, referring to her role in the flick as a “gift of a lifetime.” Stone then thanked her family, husband, and daughter for their unmatched support.

Other nominees in the category were Carey Mulligan for Maetro and Sandra Huller for Anatomy of a Fall. Before her first Oscar in 2016, Stone received a Best Supporting Actress nomination in 2014 for the role she played in ‘Birdman,’ and two years after her first win, she was also nominated for the same category for the film ‘The Favorite.’ However, she did not win either of those awards.

With two Oscars in hand, Stone now stands in line with Jane Fonda, Meryl Streep, and Jodie Foster as double Best Actress winners. The actress’s portrayal of the eccentric Bella Baster has emerged as an awards season favorite.

The 2024 Oscars unfolded a mixture of, expected victories, disappointments, and some unexpected wins. While ‘Oppenheimer’ managed to dominate over all the other films, the evening still witnessed its share of surprises. Besides Stones’ unexpected win, ‘The Boy and the Heron’ emerged as a surprise victor at the 2024 Oscars. At the ceremony, the Japanese animated film clinched the Best Animated Feature Film award.

The film’s success bagged several victories in multiple categories including the Best Director Award for Hayao Miyazaki. With this win, he secured his second Oscar in the category, solidifying his status as a major figure in the animation industry.

Meanwhile, Cillian Murphy secured the Best Actor Award for his incredible portrayal of the character, J. Robert Oppenheimer, in Christopher Nolan’s epic biographical thriller film.

Though, many of the good films received the recognition they deserved at the 2024 Oscars, ‘Barbie’ fans are slightly disappointed because, despite its success at the box office, the 2023 fantasy comedy film secured only one win from its eight nominations. This disparity has proven time and again that the box office performance of a film does not always convert into critical acclaim. In addition to Barbie, other films such as ‘Maestro,’ and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ also faced disappointment at the Oscars. Though the movies bagged several nominations, both the films failed to secure any wins.
